Menzies, Robert
1894–1978
   Menzies was Prime Minister of Australia from April 1939 until 28 August 1941, as head of the United Australia Party’s minority government. Thus it was Menzies who organized Australia’s preparations for war, announced its entry into the war (3 September 1939) and deployed three Australian divisions to the Middle East. In August 1940 he formed a coalition government with the Country Party but had only a very small majority over the opposition Labor Party. From January to May 1941 Menzies traveled back and forth to London visiting troops along the way. Menzies resigned on 28 August 1941 and his party only remained in power until 6 October when it was succeeded by a Labor government under CURTIN.
